Log Home Products

Brian Moore Log Homes typically builds from large-diameter Douglas fir and Western Red Cedar timber that is harvested from the west coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Western Red Cedar Log Homes
Many people choose our tight-grain Western Red Cedar for its warm color, scent, stability, and resistance to weather.  Some of our handcrafted log home clients use the large red Cedar's flared ends to create character beams and posts.

Douglas fir Log Homes and Timber Frame Homes
Douglas fir has a blond tint to its color and provides excellent strength to a building. Some log home clients prefer the more uniform shape and look of this large log. We recommend Douglas fir for timber frame homes.

Other Considerations for Colorado

Here are additional issues you should consider while planning to build a log home in Colorado.

Conserving Energy
The extreme temperatures in Colorado increase the importance of energy performance.  It is important to:

  • Use quality materials (e.g. Western Red Cedar logs)
  • Use efficient design principles (e.g. big roof overhangs or verandahs)
  • And hire a competent builder

The heating and cooling benefits of log homes are only as good as the quality of construction. Air infiltration unrelated to log walls can account for 50% of heat loss. That is why before our clients move in, we conduct blower door and infrared tests to ensure our handcrafted log homes provide exceptional energy savings and meet ASHRAE air exchange standards. You can read more about our solutions for energy efficiency and independence.

Walk Your Acreage With Your Contractor
We recommend you walk the Colorado property with a contractor or architect before you buy it. They can help you plan out a potential design and reduce the risks the site will limit your views, floor plan options and solar energy potential. A good professional can also help you avoid buying an expensive lot to build on. For example, bednite soil is problematic and rock is expensive to blast. If the Colorado property doesn’t have a flat area, you may be faced with an expensive septic system.

Local Labor is Not Always the Best Option
Hiring local sub-contractors can be expensive and not always reliable, especially if they are not familiar with timber frame or log home construction or if your Colorado property is remote. Our complete in-house services are often the best solution.

Green Services and Products

Brian Moore Log Homes offers log homes that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This ensures your home is built from forests harvested in the most responsible manner.

Whether or not you wish to pay to certify your home through a green program such as LEED or NAHB, it is always a good idea to review their recommendations. We can incorporate the ideas that make most sense for you. Jeremiah Johnson Log Homes is currently in the process of certifying their show home through LEED.

Please contact Jeremiah Johnson Log Homes for specific advice.  It is important you look at your product options at the design phase rather than during construction.
